Libya Deports 80 Nigerians Amid Efforts to Curb Irregular Migration

Libyan authorities have deported 80 Nigerians held in various detention facilities across the country, as part of efforts to curb irregular migration and reduce overcrowding in holding centers.

The Department for Combating Illegal Migration (DCIM), in coordination with the Nigerian Consulate in Tripoli, facilitated the repatriation via Mitiga International Airport on Wednesday.

According to Migrant Rescue Watch, the deportation followed judicial orders issued by the Libyan Judicial Police.

“The affected Nigerians were previously detained in multiple facilities and later transferred to Tripoli under strict security for their scheduled return flight,” the organisation said.

The operation included consular support to ensure returnees were properly documented and assisted before departure.

The 80 deported Nigerians are among hundreds of African migrants detained in Libya for attempting irregular crossings of the Mediterranean into Europe. Libya remains a key transit point for migrants fleeing poverty, conflict, and instability in sub-Saharan Africa.

Human rights groups continue to raise concerns over poor detention conditions, overcrowding, and abuse, urging African and European governments to strengthen safe migration channels and address the root causes of irregular migration.
